Like Gladiator movies? Then lend me your ear, because I think you’ll like this one: an entertaining, honest adventure – a tale brought to life for 2 hours of story and sword fighting. Set in 120AD, Channing Tatum continues to expand his repertoire outside the realm of dance as Marcus Aralias, a Roman hero wounded in battle and bent on facing down the ghosts of his heritage and some internal angst as well, to finally avenge the death of his father to restore his family’s good name. He and Jamie Bell as his slave Esca, play off each other really well as their relationship does some serious role swapping in search of the truth about what happened to Marcus’ father. Donald Sutherland is stellar as the wounded Marcus’ uncle who supports Marcus in recovery before Marcus goes off to seek the truth. Based on a novel I had to read as an undergrad in Ancient World History years ago. Nice to see a movie void of CGI crap throughout, too. Not for my children 14 or under.
