MI4 – Ghost Protocol

111221 MI4 Ghost ProtocolThis Mission is very well made: a great, terrific, albeit implausible  action movie thriller with scenes of  dizzying heights, kewl gadgets, and  shot on locations around the world; and that’s what makes this such  top  notch entertainment though we waited about 5 years for this installment in the series. Jeremy Renner continues to prove he’s top flight talent. A solid 8 out of 10 - Mom and Dad will love it too, and it’s OK for teenaged children.

Swiss Government Considers Piracy a Public Benefit

SwissOne in three people in Switzerland download unauthorized music, movies and games from the Internet and since last year the government has been wondering what to do about it. This week their response was published and it was crystal clear. Not only will downloading for personal use stay completely legal, but the copyright holders won’t suffer because of it, since people eventually spend the money saved on entertainment products.

J Edgar

111119 J EdgarMake no mistake;  Leonard DiCaprio is superb in this Eastwood flick even without the  help of the great makeup support  that he got playing J Edgar Hoover as this movie spans Hoover’s life from the 1920’s through the Nixon administration - 8 president’s went  in & out of office in Hoover’s tenure  according to the film. Not many movies pull off this  decades of time passage so  well,  with   J Edgar’s entertainment value attributable to DiCaprio’s terrific acting talent and the things  presented here we didn’t know about Hoover.  I give this a solid 8 out of 10 for  the fact I learned more about things Hoover did than  I ever did from history class in High School and the acting is solid. OK to watch with  Mom  & Dad,  but not for my kids until they were 12 or 13 or so due to some  violence  and some relationship “concerns” or issues that are exposed in the movie that  a conservative  preteen might not be ready for.

In Time...

111005 In Time

… is a modern era, 21st Century  version of Robin Hood, a substantial thriller/suspense SciFi flick with a powerful premise that adds interesting philosophical social  conscious to the  concept  “time is money” where: your life's cycles are bartered like money,  except when time runs out,   you die.  Safe my kids once they were 14 or older (language, violence, death), and OK to watch with and Dad both. On a scale of 5, easily a 3.

Three Musketeer's

111021 Musketeers

The 2011 iteration  of Dumas’ Three Musketeer’s  is by far is the best ever  (others were ‘73 and ‘93),  so join Athos, Aramis, and Porthos as the story unfolds how they unite with D'Artagnan,  combining forces   to battle the sinister Cardinal and  Ma’lady plotting to  incite the English into  launching a war against the  French,  which  serves segway into what certain to  be a  sequel   to  his series. Several supporting  character roles all  excel here -  and it’s great to see Orlando Bloom  back  on the big screen again in his part. Safe for  my boys  when they were 12  or older,  and good family fun to enjoy with Mom and Dad also. An easy 6 out of a 10 point rating system.

Jackie Chan in 2011
Jackie Chan’s 100th movie in America opening soon. 1911 is about the Chinese Revolution of 1911, also called the Xinhua Revolution. This was the revolution that overthrew the last emperor of China and turned china from an empire into a republic. The opening also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Xinhua Revolution, which started on October 10, 1911. Looks damn good!

Killer Elite

111001 Killer Elite

Killer Elite plays like a  John LaCarre novel put in motion; while there’s action, romance, and intrigue it’s the execution of the plot  through  concise dialog detailing these true story events that pulls you in. I found it far better than  many critics are leading you to believe.  An easy 7 out of 10 with violence and nudity because you won’t figure out the instigator of it until very late  in the story when you are told. Not for my children ages 15 or under and yet Mom & Dad both will enjoy this  movie.

Terra Nova…

… absolutely unforgettable for its visual appeal yet while also with absolutely forgettable characters yielding some boring ass dialogue to top it all off. Won’t last long except for the fact I’ll wager Fox sunk a huge chunk a cash in it.

IMO you failed me again. Others think so too. Definitely a  tad pathetic when your “In Memoriam” section for stars gone is the best, except it really wasn’t (explained here), a Taxi star? Inexcusable for you, Oscar or anyone  not to get that right if you’re going to do it.  I must admit though  Lunch did better than I expected. Pretty sure I won’t tune you in next time at all – best use of  my time? Wait it out  and read your “winners” list with coffee the morning after.

Drive

110917 Drive

Drive feels like a masterpiece crime thriller thrill ride that definitely has brutal bloody violence, foul language and some nudity in it; the mood is dark, and the story -  unnervingly  exciting – a smart and stylish work if you can tolerate violence - not  for any of my children 17 or under; Dad would like it, Mom wouldn’t finish watching it, I’m sure, and I enjoyed it -  a 9 out of 10.

“I Live, I Love, I Slay…

img444… and I am content.”  Classic Conan the Barbarian. Hollywood's movie makers must think we don’t give a rat’s ass about plot, story and dialog. Conan’s pissed,  and he’s out for revenge. The “R” rating is fully deserved for extended, extensive scenes of extreme graphic violence  and several scenes with naked  bodies doing things too. Not a pick for a first  date flick! Co-Lar, Conan’s  evil nemesis  is very well acted. In fact, except for Co-Lar’s bitch witch daughter,  most the acting is, ah, appropriately OK in this well executed action  flick. Much as  it pulled me in, Conan The Barbarian is bloody and brutal beyond belief, so I feel a little guilty  saying I love early historical stories of pillage, plunder  and conquering – true, mythical, or otherwise, because  in this the bloodshed just flows into  blood and more blood and more blood. If you’re tolerant  of revengeful things  and some other pretty knarly stuff,  you’ll like this. Absolutely not  for any  child of mine 16 or under, and certainly not for squeamish adults. In fact,  my 17 year old closed his eyes through many scenes, so forewarned is forearmed. A 6 out of 10  that Dad would like but Mom would not tolerate -  not  because  of the language -  but the incessant violence and nudity.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

110805 Rise of the Planet of the ApesWhile fun, smart, and enjoyable,   I found  “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” violent and void of a real plot, unlike most top tier SciFi flicks. A solid  7  out of 10 rating  though, because it is entertaining,  and  for the incredible display of advances in animation where the animal faces are all truly  apelike  and expressively real – amazing! -  not at all like the wax figures of previous iterations in this series which are fixed and lifeless. Not here - you’ll  feel for Caesar as the story unfolds.  This installment of “Apes” doesn’t follow, lead into,  or signify anything from previous  installations in the series. I don’t think Mom & Dad would like it so I’d never pick  it for a family movie night, and its not for  any child under 12 IMO.

SYTYD Season 8 finale

Go Melanie - she did a full back bend while in splits in her solo - amazing! and Tadd, B-Boy extraordinaire tonight at 8P. Last night SYTYCD almost out did itself compared to last weeks par excellence performances for entertainment value. I'm going to try to get tix for this entourage when they pass through here.

Side note: at first not recognizing Christina Applegate,  but I felt  she fit right  in as guest judge.  SYTYCD  should  consider guest changes as a regular  part of the show if the could get them to  keep with Christina's “fit right in” persona.

Cowboys & Aliens

110729 Cowboys & AliensWhat a terrific albeit outrageously preposterous hoot of  an Action  SciFi  thrill ride this is!  Cowboys & Aliens is a cute, crowd pleasing movie. Think  “Aliens” mashed up with ”Independence Day” delivered on the  Wild Wild West set  of “Open Range”, and Cowboys & Aliens succeeds so well   because of the huge screen presence of Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and the oh so beautiful Olivia Wilde all taking the story so seriously.  This is more fun than good, but good regardless, as attested  by the moderate size  audience of 200  or so  who  expressively  enjoyed LOL together at  various   points in the action. Safe for Mom & Dad, who will probably like  it too. Because of some violence and scant attire (I don’t recall any real nudity)  I’d say minimum age for my children to watch would be  13.

Captain America

110725_Captain AmericaWhat a  nice surprise how entertaining and fun this  movie was when Chris & I dropped in to  see it on a lark; a solid 8.5 out of 10 in entertainment factor.  It’s probably the second sleeper of the summer– a  SciFi  action movie romance masquerading as a preposterous,  incredibly not believable  faux  military WWII story about the  fictitious superhero. The matinee was surprisingly full, and while it wasn’t continuous laughter, many in the crowd obviously  did  enjoy this movie, as did Chris &  I. Not seeing  much room left for a sequel built into it, and the ending was kind of sad the way they just killed off  Haly Atwell’s character Peggy out of the blue but, hey! Looking forward to seeing alot more of her radiant beauty in future flicks. Safe for Mom & Dad  and my children when 12 and older.

End of an Awesome Tale

Tonight begins  the end of an  era our kids have grown up with. Sad smile Remember in Half Blood Prince how Snape killed Dumbledore? I think it was faked because Snape’s alliance was never really clear,  and I’m thinking tonight in Deathly Hallows 2,  Snape could be the surprise that saves Harry, and I won’t be surprised if Ron gets killed off either.

SYTYCD

Alisha's time was past and I agree  the fella sent home last night  never pushed it to the edge except for his solos,  but its taken me 8 seasons to realize  the viewers are  inconstant w their commitment to the show as evidenced by  their voting habits as to  where the best talent exists when  comparing SYTYCD  to IDOL.Oh, I picked Ryan as the Season 8 Winner first time I saw her dance but if  she  ends up in the bottom 3 one more time,  I’ll be wrong cause she’ll be gone.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

110629_Transformers3

Huge, uber cool bots brought to life and  partnering with humans against the bad guys - think: additional  bots gone awry – sounds so Sci Fi – well, it is! The visual impact of the transmogrifications and the humanity of the bots  brought to life evoke some  surprise emotional feeling though  the story is essentially weak and lost in the effects as the visual sensory overload could’ve been traded for better, upgraded dialog and plot. You’ll still sigh when Sam  watches “B’s” (his nickname for Bumblebee) eminent demise, but still,  I can only muster a 5 out of 10 rating for this installment of the series as much as  I did like it -  story  and dialog were lacking. If you’re going see it though it’s a must see on the big screen – not for dinky screens! Almost 3 hours long. Safe  to watch with parents and  grandparents, who probably won’t like it,  and OK for  children 13 and over.

Bad Teacher…

110625_Bad Teacher…wasn’t good. Not for lacking heavy doses of Cameron Diaz’s magnetic, charismatic personality – she was playfully, sensually delightful – but  for the fact none of the other actors brought any anything substantial to the classroom in this comedy where laughs are just a  tad too far apart; it seemed like the supporting cast was just in it for the box office payday. Bad Teacher could’ve been so much better with  more actor effort and a focus on script writing humor in opportunities that were not capitalized upon. This movie is not for watching with you folks nor your kids either, unless you routinely express explicit  sexual techniques, outlets, and frustrations with them.  Pass  on this one and see “Bridesmaids” instead if you’re out for a really  funny movie, because “Bad Teacher” has too few laughs and falls short of  the mark; I can’t even give it a 4 out of 10.

On Old Westerns

I love a good Western.  This post is a trip down memory lane with the old Western heroes! Click here to revisit many of  those old Western memories on the owner’s site who created the presentation. Remember those Saturday afternoon matinees that always had a Western movie along with cartoons, shorts, and a serial?  Ever wonder just who all those minor characters were who populated western after western with few lines and a yet familiar face? Well, that link above has pictures and names, so after 50 or so years, say "Howdy" to some of those general store, saloon keeper, blacksmith mini-heroes of western days gone bye.
